Monday may have set a record high temperature in Clovis, beating a heat wave in 1958 that set record highs all over eastern New Mexico.
Or then again, it may not.
According to the National Weather Service office in Albuquerque, the July 14 record high for Clovis was 103 in 1958. Cannon Air Force Base recorded a high today of 104 and Clovis Municipal Airport’s high was 102. However, NWS Meteorologist Aldis Strautins said Clovis weather records predate the establishment of either airport and are based on a private residence in town where records have been kept since 1911. That site won’t report its high temperature until this morning.
Other area highs included 104 in Portales and Melrose, missing their 1958 records by a few degrees. Tucumcari did set a record by reaching 106, beating the 1958 record high of 105.
