The Albuquerque Cubs, featuring three Clovis High players, captured the state Connie Mack (18-and-under) baseball tournament last weekend in Albuquerque and are in Houston for a five-day, double-elimination regional tournament.
The Cubs open the double-elimination tournament at 8 p.m. today (CDT) against the Houston Heat, with the game to be played at the home field of current NCAA baseball champion Rice University.
Outfielder Justin Gee, pitcher Darren Davis and shortstop Jason Seefeld all play for the Cubs. Gee just completed his freshman year at Eastern New Mexico University, Davis was a May graduate of CHS and Seefeld is entering his senior year.
The regional tournament includes the state champions from Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Missouri and Louisiana, plus a number of teams from Texas. The tournament champion moves on to the Connie Mack World Series, scheduled for Aug. 1-8 in Farmington.
