They keep coming back for more family fun.
The Walter Baldock family has gathered on the fourth weekend in July each summer for the past 50 years to celebrate their family ties and renew relationships.
This Friday through Sunday, the Baldocks will gather for their 50th annual reunion at Manzano Mountain State Park near Mountainair, said Steve Baldock of Clovis, who is serving as the family reunion president this year.
“I’m 51, and I’ve been blessed to have been at every one of the reunions,” he said. “At the time we began these reunions, my dad (Walter Baldock Jr.) had seven brothers and sisters. The purpose of the reunion is to keep the family together — not geographically, but emotionally.”
Approximately 150 family members are expected to come from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and other parts of the country as well, Steve Baldock said.
“On Sunday (during the reunion), we always have a traditional potluck dinner where we get to taste each other’s favorite dishes,” he said. “Then we have a treasure hunt for the kids. When I was growing up, we always remembered the treasure hunts. It was one of the highlights of the year.”
This year, Baldock and his wife purchased hats and T-shirts commemorating the event “so everyone has a memento of the occasion.”
As an additional footnote to the historical significance of this year’s reunion, Walter Baldock Jr. (Steve father who owned and operated Baldock & Sons Firestone store in Clovis for 30 years) just celebrated his 80th birthday on July 16.
“He’s the next-to-the-youngest of the original family,” son Steve said. “He’s one of four still living of the eight children.”
