Mr. Garland Emory Tipps, Ph.D., 84, of Portales, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home.
He was born on March 12, 1919, in Unionville, Tenn., to Floyd and Jonnye Waggoner Tipps.
He grew up in Tennessee. He attended Martin College in Pulaski, Tenn. He married Frances Frater on March 17, 1941, in Pulaski. He served in the Army during World War II. He attended George Peabody University in Nashville earning a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in 1946. From 1947 until 1949 he was Dean of Men at Martin College. He moved to Clovis in 1949. In 1954 he began teaching at Eastern New Mexico University. By 1965 he had developed a marriage and family course, which recorded over 12,000 students over the years, family members said.
In 1965 he earned a doctoral degree George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Michael Floyd Tipps; and his parents.
He is survived by his children, Mary Garland Sumner of Fort Pierce, Fla., David Tipps (and wife, Patricia Pereira) of Jupiter Farms, Fla., and Alan Tipps (and wife, Sherri) of Portales; five grandchildren, Kristi Deutsch, Michael Tipps, Joshua and Tayler Lucero and Tim Pereira; a great-granddaughter, Tessa Deutsch; a brother, Frank Wayne Bell of Hobbs.
Alan Conner will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Alan, David and Michael Tipps, Chris Harrell, Bart Walker and Kenny Howe.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
