Mr. W.R. “Bill” Franks, 78, of Fort Sumner, a businessman, died Sunday, July 13, 2003, at Farwell Convalescent Center.
He was born Sept. 11, 1924, in Sulphur Springs, Texas, to William McKinley Franks and Fay Underwood.
He graduated from White Deer High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served abord the USS Saratoga in the South Pacific. He returned to Fort Sumner in 1947 to assist with the family grocery store, where he retired in 1986. He married Charlene Bowen on May 18, 1948, in Santa Rosa. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Fort Sumner.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Cynthia Elaine Hall of Plano, Texas; a son, William Bruce Franks (and wife, Carol) of Albuquerque; a brother, Donald Franks (Bobbie) of Fort Sumner; two sisters, Vida Pruitt of Lubbock and Adie Achen (Ty) of Las Cruces; and four grandchildren, William David Lewis of McKinney, Texas, and Shannon, Allison, and Jill Franks, all of Albuquerque.
The Revs. Coy Brewer and Jim Peabody will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill Duke, Jim Walling, John McMillan, Curtis Crawford, Steve Gallegos, Bobby Russ, Don Sweet and Jake West.
Visitation is scheduled from 1 to 6 p.m. today at Chavez Funeral Home and from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church.
