Mr. Elbert L. “Pete” Hurst Jr., 70, of Clovis, died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2003, at his home.
He was born on April 26, 1933, in Morton, Texas, to Elbert L. and Carrie Lou Hurst.
He married Joyce Essex on Nov. 15, 1952, in Portales. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Clovis High School in 1950 and Eastern New Mexico University in 1954. After his service in the Marines, he received his master’s degree from ENMU. He coached football for 42 years, including stops in Gallup, Aztec, Ft. Sumner, Lubbock Cooper, Lubbock Roosevelt, Amarillo River Road, LaGrange, Lamesa, Cuero, Hobbs, Eastern New Mexico University and Clovis High School. He coached two state championship teams, Cuero and Clovis. He was named South Plains Coach of the Year in 1970 and 1972 and was inducted into the ENMU Greyhound Hall of Honor in 2002. He was a member of the Clovis/Portales Elks and an elder at First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded by his parents; and a brother, Charles.
He is survived by his wife; a son, Mark Hurst (and wife, Judy) of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Pamela Hoffman (Alan) of Dallas; three grandchildren, Alison Hoffman and Hillary and Abby Hurst.
The Revs. Jack White and Lance Clemmons will officiate the services.
Cremation has taken place.
Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.
Honorary pallbearers will be his golfing buddies, the Daylight Donut coffee group, Pat Blessing, Harvey Moerbe, Eric Roanhaus and the Clovis High School football coaches.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Clovis.
