Cavemen top Cats in 4-5A boys soccer

CARLSBAD — Senior Joey Ongaga, second in the state with 35 goals, added four to his total in the first 20 minutes of play on Tuesday as Carlsbad handed the Clovis High Wildcats a 6-1 loss in District 4-5A boys soccer.
Carlsbad (14-5, 6-2 district) advances to a first-round Class 5A state game on Saturday against Las Cruces Mayfield, while the season came to an end for the Cats (2-16, 0-8).
Jordan Atkinson scored to bring Clovis within 4-1 at halftime, but the Cavemen added goals from Marcus Navarrette and Nathan Langlitz in the second half.
In the junior varsity match, the teams played to a 2-2 tie.
