AMARILLO — Rowdy Mitchell scored two touchdowns and Farwell handed the Wheeler Mustangs a 25-6 setback Friday night in the bi-district round of the Class 1A football playoffs at Highland Park High School.
The Steers (9-1), playing a postseason game for the first time since 1999, advanced to an area round game at 5 p.m. (CST) on Friday against Sunray (9-1) at Dick Bivins Stadium in Amarillo. Meantime, Wheeler (6-5) played its last game before moving to six-man football next year.
Quarterback Jason Johnson scored on a 7-yard run on the final play of the first quarter for Farwell, capping a 10-play, 44-yard drive set up by Robbie Tabb’s interception.
The Steers’ 6-0 lead held up until the third quarter when Mitchell scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards. Those touchdowns were set up, respectively, by Grant Gregory’s fumble recovery at the Wheeler 10 and a muffed punt snap which gave Farwell the ball at the Mustangs’ 14.
Matthew Edwards’ 15-yard run with 3:31 left capped a five-play, 46-yard drive after an interception by freshman Derrick Chandler and made it 25-0.
The Mustangs got on the board on a 6-yard pass from James Chapman to Josh Britt with 2:14 left, set up by a 68-yard completion on a deflected pass from Chapman to Hector Emiliano.
