Juan B. Salaz, 84, of Portales, died Friday, Nov. 7, 2003, at the Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
He was born June 6, 1919, in Corazon to Margarita and Jose Salaz.
Mr. Salaz grew up in the Las Vegas, N.M., area and graduated from Highlands University as a silversmith. He then entered the U.S. Army Air Force and served during World War II in England. Upon discharge, he moved to Texas, where he met and married Rosa Guadalupe Cordova on Oct. 19, 1950, in Hereford, Texas. The family moved to Portales in 1953, and he began working as a carpenter. He worked with Fred and Gene Collins in Portales for several years. He enjoyed working with jewels and stones, and was an avid handyman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; five sons, Levie Salaz, George Salaz, Luiz Cordova, Henry Joseph Salaz and Raymond Salaz; a daughter, Maria Suzanna Salaz; four brothers, Marcos, Tobias, Jose, and Ernesto Salaz; and a sister, Marcelita Lucero.
He is survived by four sons: Gene, Leroy, Jose and Carlos Salaz, all of Portales; a daughter, Dora Martinez of Tucumcari; a sister, Antonia Lucero of Amarillo;15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Rosary will take place at 7 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
The Celebrant for the services will be Fr. Tobin Hitt.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery
Pallbearers will be Henry Salaz, George Salaz, Anthony Salaz, Kenneth Salaz, Gene John Salaz, Liberato Salaz, David Salaz, and Fabian Gallegos.
Honorary pallbearers will be Gene, Leroy, Jose, and Carlos Salaz.
