ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis set up a first-place showdown with nemesis Hobbs with a pair of easy wins in the Duke City.

Aimee Hilburn scored 17 of her game-high 19 points in the first half and Tori Quintana added four 3-pointers and 14 points as the Lady Wildcats rode a big second quarter to a 75-50 win over Eldorado on Saturday in the second of back-to-back District 4-5A contests.

Hilburn scored 17 points in the first half and Quintana and Tori Northcutt hit 3-pointers in a 12-1 run to end the second quarter as Clovis (22-3, 6-1 district) raced to an 18-point halftime lead.

The Lady Wildcats, who beat Manzano 63-41 on Friday, trail Hobbs (19-6, 7-0) by a game.

Clovis coach Miles Watters said he was a little surprised the Lady Wildcats took control of the game against Eldorado with starting posts and leading scorers Brittany Blackmon and Monique Walker on the bench with two fouls each.

“We went to a matchup zone and shut them down defensively,” Watters said. “And then we went on a tear offensively.

“The kids really ran the floor well and T-Bird (Northcutt) stepped up defensively and hit a big 3-pointer.”
Clovis has played two of its best offensive games against Eldorado. The Lady Wildcats beat the Eagles 86-52 in their first meeting.

“I don’t know what it is about Eldorado,” Watters said. ‘They’ve got some pretty good athletes. We just seem to shoot lights out against them.”

Meagan Hines led the Eagles (14-6, 3-4) with 18 points and Caitlyn Demarest added 11.

In Friday’s game, Blackmon and Hilburn scored 14 points each and Quintana added 13 points, including three of the team’s five 3-pointers.

“We started the game really well, which I was concerned about,” Watters said. “We were real focused and played well in the first half.

“It was a good night for us. We had real good effort.”
Latoya Nixon led the Lady Monarchs (5-16, 1-6) with 13 points and Leslie Wood added 12.
