Manuel Lopez, 85, of Abilene, Texas, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2004, at his daughter’s home in Abilene.
He was born on April 21, 1918, in Clareville, Texas, to Tomasa and Francisco Lopez.
During World War II he served in the Army working with messenger pigeons. He married Elida Lopez in 1949 in Brighton, Colo. The family moved to Portales in 1979. He moved to Abilene about three years ago and became a member of the Graham Street Church of Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Miguel Lopez and Anastacio Lopez; and his wife.
Survivors include six sons, Anselmo Lopez (and wife, Peggy) of Abilene, Roger Lopez (Teresa), Manuel Lopez Jr. (Amanda) and Frank Lopez, all of Portales, Juan Lopez (Cindy) of Waco, Texas, and Manuel V. Lopez of Lubbock; four daughters, Benita Jimenez of Abilene and Olga Martinez (Octavio), Gloria Gonzales (Rafael) and Tomasa Martinez (Angel), all of Portales; 34 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five brothers, Jose Lopez of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Gallo Rodriguez of Beeville, Texas, Enrique Rodriguez of Arizona, Pedro Lopez and Jerry Lopez, both of San Angelo, Texas; three sisters, Benita Estorga of Portales, Caroline Ramirez of San Angelo and Elida Quintero of Houston.
A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales.
Francisco Saldona will officiate the services. Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chris Leal, Orlando Martinez, David Martinez, Frank Lopez Jr., Alex Escobar and Arnold Lopez.
