RIO RANCHO — Rio Grande’s Keith Lowe doubled twice, driving in one run and setting up the other, and the Ravens held on for a 2-1 victory over Clovis High Thursday in the opening round of the Rio Rancho Invitational baseball tournament.

Tim McGuire pitched a complete-game five-hitter to get the win for the Ravens (4-1), ranked fifth in Class 5A. McGuire walked two, hit three and struck out six.

Rio Grande advanced to a 3:30 p.m. semifinal game today against defending 5A state champion La Cueva, which beat Roswell High 14-6.

Clovis (3-1) will face the Coyotes in a consolation semifinal at 8 a.m. today.

Senior Mark Young, who suffered a serious knee injury during the football season, made his first appearance of the spring for the Cats and took the loss despite throwing five solid innings. He allowed seven hits, with three walks and four strikeouts.

Senior Ryan Denton pitched the sixth for Clovis.

Rio Grande took the lead in the first on a one-out single and Lowe’s two-out double. The Ravens made it 2-0 in the fourth on a walk, Lowe’s double and an error on the relay play at third base.

Clovis pulled to within a run in the sixth when senior shortstop Jason Seefeld doubled, took third on a passed ball and scored on Denton’s sacrifice fly.

Seefeld went 2-for-3 in the game for the Cats.
