Ora Lay, 85, of Melrose died Monday, March 22, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born on May 12, 1918, in Berlin, Okla., to George and Pearl Basham Blackburn.
She married Curtis Lay on Dec. 4, 1936, in Berlin. They moved to Melrose in 1949 from California. She helped her husband farm and ranch. Family members said she loved to travel with her husband and loved hobbies and crafts. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Melrose where she taught Sunday School and helped with many activities.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Eugene Lay; two brothers, Marvin and Fred Blackburn; two sisters, Esther Schiller and Rosanna Wright; and a great-grandson, Logan Lay.
Survivors include a daughter, Violet Widner (and husband, Harvey) of Duncanville, Texas; three sons, Curtis Lay Jr. of Lubbock, Texas, Johnny Lay (Genita) of Melrose and Jim Lay (Donna) of Melrose; four sisters, Gladys Green of Elk City, Okla., Eloise Hill of Las Vegas, Nev., and Louise Hall and Johnnie Jones, both of Sayre, Okla.; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Melrose Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Mike, Jeff and Todd Widner and Ritchie, Josh, Caleb, Jared, Jeremiah and Levi Lay.
Honorary pallbearers are Leslie Lay Riley, Lisa Avent, Joni Elliott, Laney Pierce and Liberty Sobey.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church Melrose, the Melrose Cemetery Fund or the Baptist Children’s Home.
