Mr. Virgil Lee Elms, 91, of Clovis, a retired school teacher, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Odyssey Hospice in Amarillo.
He was born on Dec. 1, 1912, in Alanreed, Texas, to Edward and Sarah Harris Elms.
He graduated from Alanreed High School and from West Texas State Teachers College in 1938. He married J. Edna Pettit on Sept. 27, 1941, in Wellington, Texas. He taught in the Friona public schools before moving to Clovis in 1943. In Clovis he taught shop and government until his retirement. He was a member of Lion’s Club, worked in Boy Scouting and was a member of Central Baptist Church since 1943.
The family will visit with friends following the committal service at the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a son, Gary Don Elms; four sisters, Poshia Elms, Annie Bell Brown, Mertie Lou Schaffer and Elizabeth Kunkel; and two brothers, George Washington Elms and Jasper Paul Elms.
Survivors include two sons, Duane Elms (and wife, Kathryn) of Silver City and Deryl Elms (Linda) of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Jennifer Elms of Houston and Jeffery Elms (Leslie) of Texarkana, Texas; two great-grandchildren, Archer Bishop Elms and Aurian Jade Elms; several nieces and nephews; and the staff of the Senior Citizen Residence Center.
The Rev. Joseph Vest will officiate the services.
Entombment will be at Plains Sanctuary Mausoleum in Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.
Pallbearers are J.E. Williams, Travis Denton, Wiley Snyder, Pete Davis, Paul Matherly and Don Bell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Baptist Church Building Fund or the charity of your choice.
