Mr. Antonio “Tony” Zamora, 89, of Portales, died Friday, May 21, 2004, at Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, Calif.
He was born on May 2, 1915, in Fort Sumner, to Maria and Martin Zamora.
He grew up in Ft. Sumner. He married Amelia Maestas on March 26, 1938, in Olton, Texas. He worked for many years in farming before being employed as a custodian by Eastern New Mexico University in 1968. He continued there until retiring in 1976. He moved to Tracy, Calif., to be near his family, and returned to Portales in 1981. He was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church and had worked as an elderly companion for the Community Services Center in Portales. He was also active in Abuelitos and Senior Citizens. He had been living in California since 1998. Family members said he enjoyed storytelling, music, dancing and playing dominoes.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Daniel and Phillip Zamora; two daughters, Pilar Gomez and Ramona Zamora; five brothers; a sister; and his wife.
Survivors include a son, Tony Zamora (and wife, Geraldine) of Burson, Calif.; five daughters, Rita Sena of Portales, Florinda Payne of Vancouver, Wash., Lupe Nieto (Guadalupe) of Syracuse, Kan., Susie Aragon (Gilbert) of Santa Fe and Suzanne Zamora of Clovis; 30 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alfonsa Zamora of El Paso, Texas, and Dometilia Zamora of Fort Collins, Colo.
A rosary is scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
The Rev. Tobin Hitt wil officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Patrick Griffin, Joe-Manuel Sigala, Joe Adrian Mondragon, Jim Arias, Jesse Zamora and John Sena.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
