Lisa Moore, a Clovis housewife and part-time nurse, offered these holiday comments in a recent e-mail:
“Oh say, can you see by the dawn’s early light — the spent firecracker casings lying all over the place?
“All you patriotic folks who were overcome by the urge to celebrate the Fourth with the rockets’ red glare and bombs bursting in air, how about being models of good American citizenry by picking up at least as many firecracker remnants as you shot off?
“Your neighbors, while just as patriotic as you are, may not be so proudly hailing all the trash you launched into their yards.
“And did the dawn’s early light also reveal that our flag was still there? Or have we forgotten its broad stripes and bright stars, and indeed, the real significance of our Independence Day in the light of our festive pyrotechnics?
“By all means, let’s keep on celebrating our great land. While we’re at it, let’s also keep it America the Beautiful, and proudly fly our Grand Old Flag!”
