Melody Pennington Garcia, 43, of Fort Sumner, died Friday, June 4, 2004, in Fort Sumner.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1960, in Fort Sumner, to Luther and Lavinia Sullivan Pennington.
She was raised and attended schools in Fort Sumner. She made her home in Florida for several years where she completed classes in jail administration. She was an assistant fire chief for the Old Town (Fla.) Volunteer Fire Department. She returned to Fort Sumner where she served as a De Baca County deputy sheriff during the Champ Landrum administration and later worked in the De Baca County Corrections Department as jail administrator. She was currently employed as a Licensed Bail Agent by Hank’s Bail Bond Company in Clovis. Family members said she enjoyed going to movies, spending time with her friends and bowling.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, David Bryan Brown; her husband, Carl A. Brown; and her father.
Survivors include a son, Carl A. Brown (and fiancé, Amy Davis) of Riverview, Fla.; her mother; two sisters, Barbara Corbett (Bob) of Gansevoort, N.Y.; and Belinda Branson of Vancouver, Wash.; a brother, Robert Pennington (Cindy) of Fort Sumner; an uncle, Harold Sullivan (Mott) of South Carolina; and two aunts, Caroline Reames of South Carolina and Flossie Pollard of Fort Sumner.
The Rev. Monty Leavell will officiate the services.
Cremation will follow the services.
Pallbearers are Gordon and Stanley Morris, Chris Hughes, Gary Graves, J.O. Achen and Michael Perry.
Honorary bearers are Crystal McLeroy, Mike Mussman, Hank Bayless and Kenny Arnold.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
