Mrs. Bernice Dodson Melton, 89, of Portales, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born on Sept. 28, 1914, in Checotah, Okla., to Maggie and William Dodson.
She graduated from high school in Durant, Okla., where she was active in the National Honor Society. She went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in education from Southeastern State University in 1936. While in college she was a member of Pi Kappa Sigma Sorority.
She married Howard Melton on Aug. 29, 1936, in Durant, Okla. They made their home in Midwest City, Okla. from 1948 until 1956 when they moved to Carlsbad. While living in Midwest City and Carlsbad, she taught in the public schools. In 1959, they moved to Portales. She went on to complete a master’s degree in education and an education specialist degree at Eastern New Mexico University and taught half-time in the College of Business at ENMU for 13 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and two brothers, Major J. W. Dodson and Cleo W. Dodson.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Howard Melton; two sons, Howard Melton (and husband, Joann) of Chicago and John Melton (Julie) of Aurora, Colo.; four grandchildren, Heather, Patrick, Anjali and Elizabeth Melton; a sister, Margaret Findley (C.H.) of Iowa, La.
The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Vern Witten, Bob Matheny, Ty Walker, Adam Gutierrez, Walter “Cotton” Clark and Reid McClosky.
