Melrose hosting Old-timer’s Celebration

By William Thompson

Melrose will hold its annual Old-Timer’s Celebration today and Saturday and Mayor Ray Hester said he expects 300 to 400 people will take part in the festivities.

“The old-timer’s celebration has been going on for 25 years or more,” said Hester. “It’s a way for us to honor the old-timers here in Melrose, the people who homesteaded here. Last year we had former residents of Melrose come from as far away as New York and California.”

Hester said this year’s celebration will feature an antique car show.

“I believe there will be more than 50 antique cars parked on the north side of Melrose Park … and we will have a parade (on Saturday) morning at 9:30 a.m.,” Hester said. “The parade will probably have about 200 people participating. There will be tractors and antique cars in the parade, and of course there will be some politicians too.”
