Mrs. Ruby Littlejohn, 86, of Portales, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004 at La Posada Hospice Center in Las Cruces.
She was born on April 13, 1918, in Manila, Ark., to Mary Matilda and William Joseph Rhodes.
Her family moved to Otis in 1923 and on to Hagerman in 1924. They returned to Fayetteville, Ark. in 1927. In 1933, the family returned to Hagerman.
She attended Eastern New Mexico University in Portales where she earned a degree in elementary education. She taught for 32 years in Highway, Dora, Bakersfield, Calif. and Roswell. Family members said she loved working with students and enriching their lives.
She was married to Arthur Littlejohn on July 30, 1943, in Portales. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Roswell, then in 1987 she and her husband moved to Portales to retire. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Portales. Family members said she was a devoted mother and grandmother, and particularly enjoyed her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Jack, Mike, Woodrow, James and Ray Rhodes; five sisters, Zebia Curtright, Opal Wrinkle, Nevada Kiper, Bernice Schierholt, and Beatress Kiper; a son, Donnie Jim Littlejohn; and by her husband, Arthur Littlejohn.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mickey Samuel and Pam Littlejohn of Somerville; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Jim Horton of Anthony; four grandchildren, Chris Horton (and wife Amy) of Portales, Todd Horton of Chaparral, and Shannon and Allison Littlejohn of Somerville, Texas; one great-grandchild, Brett Andrew Horton of Portales; two brothers, John Rhodes and Lee Roy Rhodes, both of Hagerman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The Rev. Jim Horton will officiate the services, assisted by Todd and Chris Horton.
Pallbearers will be Chris Horton, Todd Horton, Eugene Haley, Frank Rhodes, Mickey Littlejohn and Mike Littlejohn.
Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
