Thomas J. “T.J.” Tipton, 81, of Texico, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 2004, in Belen.

He was born on April 15, 1923, in Plainview, Texas, to O’Connell “Charlie” and Esther Moore Tipton.

He was raised in New Mexico and married Marcine Pardue on Jan. 18, 1947. He joined the Conservation Corps in his youth and worked all over New Mexico. He was a member of the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and served in World War II in the South Pacific Theater with the infantry. He was awarded two Purple Hearts. Family members said he was a longtime cowboy in Arizona and New Mexico and was the foreman for Castors, Baxters, and Feed and Ranch Supply, retiring in 1973.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sandy Cox and Dee Hall (and husband, Gary), both of Belen; four sons, Skip “Tipton” Moss (Glenda) of Clovis, Charles “Chuck” Tipton (Susan) of Tahoka, Texas, Ronny Tipton (Dottie) of Portales and Frank Tipton (Vicki) of Clovis; 19 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place.
