ALBUQUERQUE — The Grady Lady Bronchos made things extremely difficult for themselves in the Class 1A Region B tournament at Menaul High School, but still managed to come through with two wins and a spot at the this week’s State Tournament.

Grady dropped the first two games of Friday’s semifinal before rallying to beat Temple Baptist 22-25, 11-25, 25-18, 25-12, 15-9. In Saturday’s title match, Grady spotted District 4-1A Logan the early lead before pulling out a17-25, 27-25, 26-24, 25-11.

“We didn’t go ready to play,” coach Missi Glover said. “We struggled both days.”

Still she believed her team could come back, even after falling behind 2-0 in games to Temple Baptist.

“Yesterday, around the fourth game, we decided to play and it took us until the fourth day today,” Glover said.

She added it might have been overconfidence for her team, now 18-1.

Grady swept Logan in three previous matches this season.

Estancia eliminates Texico
ALBUQUERQUE — Texico lost a two games to none lead and fell to Estancia 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 12-15 Friday in the first round of the Class 2A Regional D Tournament at Sandia Prep High School.

“We played well, we just didn’t get a point here and there when we needed it,” Texico coach Mike Littlejohn said.
Littlejohn said poor serving hurt the Lady Spikers. “You can’t do that against good teams,” he said.

Junior Lori Richardson collected 27 kills and freshman Bryn Mayfield dished out 53 assists for Texico, which ends the season 18-4.

“This is one of the best matches I’ve been involved with,” Littlejohn said. “They can be disappointed, we all are, but don’t hold your heads down.”
Estancia and Texico split a pair of matches during the regular season.
