Pampa Harvesters coach Jeff Reed said playing and coaching at Clovis shaped the way he teaches the game.

His first coaching experience was helping Clovis assistant coach Mike Hankins with the junior varsity team when he was student teaching. Current Hobbs girls coach Johnny Casaus was his athletic director when Reed coached at Yucca Junior High. There he got tips on handling paperwork, uniforms and equipment. Bubba Jennings taught Reed about intensity when Jennings was an assistant coachand he learned a little bit about being tough from former Wildcat coach Steve Henry.

During his junior year at Clovis, Reed and his teammates heard an earful from Henry during one practice.

“He was yelling and chewing us out and going crazy,” Reed remembers. In turn, the team reacted with frustration and anger at the verbal barrage.

Reed said Henry responded by telling them, “If you can’t handle that, how can you handle the press at Hobbs or playing at Alamogordo?”

More than a dozen years later, Reed lit into the Harvesters in the same manner.

“If we can handle the pressure I put on you, you can handle playing at Randall.”

Randall is one of Pampa’s main rivals.

For Clovis boys basketball games this season, Wildcat coach J.D. Isler has the Clovis bench seats moved under the east hoop and the visiting bench seats under the west hoop, toward the auxiliary gym. Most schools have the benches along the sidelines.

It doesn’t have anything to do with basketball strategy, Isler said. By having the benches moved, the Clovis cheerleaders can perform in front of the student section and the band has easier access to the stands.

Texico senior Braden Vaughan is looking at a number of schools to play football.

He has started at quarterback and defensive back for the Wolverines. Over the past three years Texico has gone to the title game and won two state championships.

He is considering Texas schools Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons in Abilene and Angelo State in San Angelo.
