The Base Realignment and Closure process begins this month with the announcement of BRAC commission members. The committee is charged with recommending military installations for closure or realignment.

Q When will base closures be announced?
A Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld must publish his recommendations for closure or realignment by May 16. Commission members have until Sept. 8 to provide President Bush a report containing its findings and conclusions based on a review and analysis of the Secretary’s recommendations.
The president must accept or reject the commission’s recommendations in their entirety by Sept. 23. If accepted, Congress will then have 45 legislative days to reject the recommendations in their entirety or they become binding.
