The vehicle involved in a fatal accident north of Clovis on Saturday morning was reported stolen less than two hours earlier by a city resident, state police officials say.
The accident, which claimed the life of Adam Romero, 15, happened at about 3:20 a.m. Saturday on County Road M.
The driver of the vehicle, Charles Valero, 16, was in critical condition following the wreck and transported to Plains Regional Medical Center. New Mexico State Police Sgt. Wesley Waller could not comment late Sunday night on Valero’s condition.
Plains Regional Medical Center officials said Sunday they have no listing for Valero.
Police believe alcohol and excessive speed were factors in the accident, Waller said.
The investigation is ongoing and no charges in connection with the accident fatality or vehicle theft have been pressed at this time, he said.
Waller said the state police investigators may be able to finish the investigation today, and will take evidence collected to the district attorney to see about possible charges.
