Mrs. Julia Salazar, 84, of Portales, died Sunday, April 24, 2005, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.
She was born on Nov. 27, 1921, in Juan de Dios, to Antonia and Victor Chavez.
She married Emilio Salazar on June 22, 1942, in Puerta de Luna. They lived in various towns in New Mexico and Texas before settling in Portales in 1965. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church. In the 1970’s, she started the “Las Guadalupanas” organization and served as the president for many years. She directed many Christian plays and was instrumental in organizing various celebrations at St. Helen in Portales and Our Lady of Guadalupe in Clovis. Family members said she enjoyed helping those in need, and spent many nights caring for sick friends and family members. She enjoyed doing crafts of all kinds, making quilts and baking and cooking.
She was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers, Santiago, Salomon, Doroteo, Jose Inez, Juan, and Abel Chavez; a sister, Dolorita Chavez; and a son, Joe Patrick Chavez.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Patricia “Trish” Hawkins (and husband, Chester “Chet”) of Tulia, Texas; four brothers, Victor Chavez (Thelma) of Albuquerque, Ernesto Chavez (Evelyn “Eva”)of Juan de Dios, Abelino Chavez (Mary), and Cristoval Chavez (Rosa), all of Clovis; four sisters, Eulalia Mirabal, Rita Salazar, and Teresa “Terry” C. Paiz (Raymond), all of Portales, and Josie Paiz (Johnny) of Dora.
A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. today at St. Helen Catholic Church in Portales.
Father Tobin Hitt will officiate the services.
Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Victor Salazar, Ray D. Paiz Jr., Johnny, Chris, Raymond, Orlando, and Jerry Chavez, and Raymond Mirabal.
