Folks in Farwell have another shopping choice for household items.
The Family Dollar store opened Thursday at 501 Ave. A to join the Family Dollar family of 5,700 shops nationwide, according to store manager David Mendoza. Family Dollar specializes in a wide array of merchandise for the household and family — from toilet paper to cat food, automotive to apparel — according to its Web site. So far the Farwell location employs six people, Mendoza said.
“Farwell and Texico needed somewhere convenient to shop,” said Mendoza, who usually mans the Family Dollar in Portales but works at other locations when they need extra help. “It is time to come to the small towns.”
Two other new businesses opened their doors in Farwell within the past year, said Chamber of Commerce secretary Cynthia Thigpen.
Farwell resident Lyndi Austin launched a hair salon called New You on the 300 block of Ave. A.
Bullfrog Rock and Garden Place, a seller of stone planters and garden items, is also a fairly recent addition to Farwell, Thigpen said. Texico resident Larry Powell opened Bullfrog in March 2004 where he works with a staff of one.
Although Thigpen and her Chamber of Commerce colleagues “think it’s wonderful” when new businesses come to town, she said, she does not foresee a Farwell economic boom.
“I don’t know if we have a grand vision (of Farwell),” Thigpen said, “We are just trying to stay afloat — it’s one day at a time.”
