MIDLAND, Texas — Midland College men’s basketball coach Grant McCasland announced that Clovis High School graduates Tigg Bunton and Dominique Easterlin have signed national letters of intent with the junior college program for the 2005-06 school year.
The 6-foot-8 Bunton and the 6-4 Easterlin helped lead the Wildcats to a 22-6 record as seniors. Clovis was eliminated by Hobbs in the District 4-5A tournament semifinals.
Bunton averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds last season and earned MVP honors in the 2005 Golden Spread All-Star Classic in Amarillo. He was a first-team all-district and first-team Class 5A all-state selection, and has been selected to play in the New Mexico North-South all-star game later this summer.
Bunton was recruited by several Division I universities, but did not have a high enough score on his ACT test to qualify, according to Clovis High boys basketball coach J.D. Isler.
Easterlin averaged 18 points and seven rebounds as a senior, earning second-team all-district and second-team Class 5A all-state honors. He was also selected to play in the New Mexico North-South game.
Midland is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The Chaparrals have been to the NJCAA national tournament each of the past two seasons, finishing third with a 30-6 record in 2004 and upsetting top-ranked Arizona Western in this year’s event before going out.
Midland had several players sign with Division I programs off this year’s squad, which finished with a 26-10 record.
Isler, Bunton and Easterlin could not be reached for comment.
