The New Mexico Association of Counties unanimously passed a resolution in support of the Curry and Roosevelt County government entities’ efforts to keep Cannon Air Force Base open.
The 33 NMAC members passed the resolution Friday morning during the an annual NMAC Conference in Hobbs.
Dennis Lopez, Roosevelt county commissioner, said he made a 10-minute presentation on Friday morning discussing the ramifications and efforts.
“They gave us their overwhelming support,” Lopez said. “They said they could help us if we needed anything. It’s very good news.”
Lopez said NMAC members asked about the economic effects and the strategies Roosevelt and Curry County are using to keep Cannon open.
“They were very concerned and compassionate about it,” Lopez said. “They showed willingness to write letters and all 33 counties are on board.”
A regional hearing with members of the Base Realignment and Closure Commission is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. June 24 at the Marshall Junior High Auditorium.
