Dorothea “Dorothy” Smith, 85, died Saturday, June 18, 2005, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis.
She was born June 19, 1919, in St. Peter, Minn., to Frank and Alta Schadt Dutton.
She graduated from nurses training in 1940 and married Clarence Smith on Feb. 12, 1941, in St. Peter, Minn. They lived in Lexington, Minn., until Clarence was inducted into military service. She came to Clovis on Jan. 1, 1943, where her husband was stationed at Clovis Air Base. She started working at Clovis Memorial Hospital the next day. They were in Clovis for two years.
After the war she lived at St. Peter, Minn., where they farmed for three years. She moved back to Clovis in 1949 and worked at Memorial Hospital. Later, she was school nurse for the Portales public schools for 11 years and then the Clovis public schools for six years before retiring in 1974, family members said.
She attended Trinity Lutheran Church. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1945, the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees and the New Mexico Association of Educational Retirees.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; infant son Bruce; two sisters and two brothers.
Survivors include three sons, Leroy Smith (and wife, Tresa) of San Angelo, Texas, Glenn Smith of Mahtomedi, Minn., and Wayne Smith (Feryl) of Katy, Texas; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.
Pastor Bonita Knox will officiate the services.
Pallbearers are Brent Smith, Craig Smith, Ryan Smith, Darin Smith, Eugene Guthals, Charles Guthals, Howard Leavell, Jacob Norvell and Scott Nelson.
Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.
