Mr. James Pierce “Jim” Southard, 70, of Kenna, died Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2005, at Covenant Lakeside Hospital in Lubbock.

He was born on Aug. 30, 1934, on the family ranch in Kenna, to Frank and Kathleen McDowell Southard.

He spent most of as a cattle rancher. In 1977, he founded Kenna Water Sales, a transport business that serviced the oil fields of Chaves and Roosevelt counties. He married Jean V. Jenkins on June 19, 1953, in Santa Rosa. He married Betty Mitchell on Dec. 30, 1994, in Morton, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bill, Joe and Charles Southard; and by his first wife, Jean.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Sam Southard (and wife, Rita) of Elida and Tim Southard (Laura) of Kenna; two daughters, Kate Southard (Dan Hernandez) of Albuquerque and Jamie Moorhead (Jerry) of Mesquite, Texas; seven grandchildren, Danielle Robinson (Will), Jack Hernandez, Evan Moorhead, James Shay and Samantha, Wren and Chance Southard; and a sister, Pat Binkley of El Paso, Texas.

The Rev. Beth Anthony will officiate.

Burial will be at Kenna Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Vern Newlin, Johnny and Bill Welch, Jesse Porter, David and Kenneth Craig, Adam Anthony, Leroy Radcliff, Joe C. Miller, Travis Johnson, Bob Bird and Jim McDowell.

Honorary pallbearers are his friends, neighbors and business associates.
