Reporter’s notebook: Local singer’s son fills in on national anthem

A familiar voice was missing from the last two Clovis football games as national anthem singer John Urban was recuperating from surgery for a brain hematoma.

An Urban was still on the microphone, however, as his son Ken sang the anthem and did the announcing duties for the Clovis High band’s halftime show.

John Urban has been singing the national anthem at CHS football games since 1973 with only rare work-related absences.

“I thought he did a marvelous job,” said John Urban, said Urban, who listened to his son’s performance on the radio. “Kenny was a little uptight about it because he had never done that before, but he did an excellent job,”
John Urban plans to return to his normal singing and announcing roles Nov. 4 during the Carlsbad game.
