Eppie Mae Elder

Mrs. Eppie Mae Elder, 96, of Portales died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.
She was born Sept. 26, 1908 in Leonard, Texas to Dave and Doffie Jones.
She attended school in Leonard and occasionally rode to high school in a horse-and-buggy. She married Ira Rickman Elder in Hamlin, Texas on Nov. 20, 1926. There were six children born to this home. She lived in Hamlin on the family farm and ranch until 1948 when the family moved to Muleshoe. In 1954 they moved to a farm near Portales.
From 1965 until 1974, Mrs. Elder was the Director of Housekeeping at Eastern New Mexico University. She moved to Golden Acres Retirement Community in 1984, and lived there until moving to the nursing home in 1997.
She was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Geneva Hill; two brothers, Alvin and Gene Jones; son, George Elder; daughter, Ruby Gene Elder; grandson, Michael Elder; daughter-in-law, Joyce Elder and husband; Ira Rickman Elder who died Feb. 2, 1964.
Survivors include three sons, Gerald (and wife Barbara) Elder of Sweetwater; James (Linda) Elder of Muleshoe; and Thurman (Alta) Elder of Portales; daughter, Freda (Carlin) Long of Muleshoe; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Bessie Elder-Voight of Lubbock.
Reverend Jeff Sedberry will officiate.
Visitation will be at Wheeler Mortuary from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday evening.
Burial will be at Afton Cemetery in Hamlin, Texas.
Pallbearers are Randy Elder, Lance Elder, Curtis Elder, Lee Elder, Glen Green and Brad Long.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Portales.
