ALBUQUERQUE — Top-ranked Las Cruces Mayfield scored on a fumble recovery and a blocked punt Friday night and turned back two-time defending champion La Cueva 21-7 in a Class 5A state semifinal playoff game at Wilson Stadium.
The Trojans (13-0) will meet either second-ranked Clovis (11-1) or No. 3 crosstown rival Onate (11-1) in the finals. The Wildcats and Knights meet today at Las Cruces’ Field of Dreams.
Mayfield’s Chris Hernandez caught a pass from quarterback David Bustillos and fumbled at the La Cueva 8 late in the first quarter. The ball rolled into the end zone and tight end Jason Wuerz recovered for a Trojans touchdown, capping a 60-yard drive.
The Bears (10-3) tied the score late in the half on a 1-yard run by Bryson Carl, but sophomore Carlos Olivas blocked a La Cueva punt and recovered it in the end zone for a go-ahead touchdown with 8:58 left in the third quarter.
The Trojans then marched 68 yards in eight plays for a clinching 2-yard touchdown run by Olivas with 2:50 left in the game.
