Lady Cats finish road stretch with win

FRENSHIP, Texas — The Clovis Lady Wildcats finished off their longest road stretch of the season with a 48-41 win at Frenship, Texas, on Monday night.

Since its last home game on Dec. 6, Clovis has played six games on the road, the last three in Texas.
Clovis coach Miles Watters said his team is better for having gone through such a stretch.

“They’ve gone into some hostile situations and they are a road-hardened team now,” Watters said. “We knew it was gonna be a tough stretch, but we went through it and we were one second away from being undefeated.”

Clovis (8-1) lost its only game of the season against Levelland, Texas, in overtime on Dec. 13 after a half-court shot at the end of the fourth quarter tied the game.

Frenship (9-7) hit a similar shot on Monday — a half-court heave as time expired — but this time the Lady Cats were nine points ahead.

“If we have a big enough lead, a shot like that won’t hurt you,” Watters said.

Senior Aimee Hilburn led the Lady Cats with 19 points followed by senior Brittany Blackmon with 18.

“I think Brittany did a good job inside,” Watters said. “And Aimee hit a big shot whenever we needed points.”
Frenship had no players score in double figures.

The Lady Cats’ next game will be in the Clovis Plateau Classic on Dec. 28. Watters said he is glad to get a break.

“We are so relieved to get this semester and these six road games behind us,” Watters said. “I am extremely proud of what they’ve done so far this year.”

Nine games in, the defending Class 5A state champs have learned that they will get the opposing team’s best effort night in and night out.

“It’s a case where everyone has you marked on their calendar,” Watters said.
