Candidacy deadline 5 p.m. Tuesday
Parties interested in running for office in the March 7 Clovis municipal election must declare their candidacy in the city clerk’s office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tuesday, according to City Clerk Leighann Melancon
Four City Commission seats and a judge’s position are up for election in Clovis.
The city clerk said candidates will be required to pay a $50 fee to run for city commissioner or $100 to run for judge. She said they will also need to show their certified voter registration card.
City officials in Melrose and Texico said they plan to hold a municipal election March 7 as well, with Tuesday being the deadline to declare candidacy.
Zia Lodge explosion injures room occupant
A can of bug spray and a stove pilot light produced a small explosion in a room of the Zia Lodge, but no serious injuries Friday evening, according to Battalion Chief Ike Burns of the Clovis Fire Department.
The room’s occupant was transported to a nearby hospital, and damage to the room included broken dishes and about two feet of sheet rock that was blown off the wall, Burns said.
Representatives from the Zia Lodge declined to comment. Burns said warnings not to leave the bug spray in a confined space or near pilot lights were marked on the canister.
“I’ve been to a few explosions like that — it’s been a while. People need to be sure to read instructions,” Burns said.
