The Farwell Steers won a nip-and-tuck game from Texas District 3-1A leader Sudan Friday night, beating the Hornets 36-35 in overtime at Farwell.
No one scored in double figures for either team. Senior post Colton Sudderth led all scorers with nine points for Farwell (11-14, 3-2 district).
The Steers forced overtime on a 10-foot jumper from the lane by junior guard Brett Howard as time expired, making it 32-32.
In the extra session, Sudan (17-9, 4-1) had possession with about a minute left and played for a final shot. Howard stole the ball with about nine seconds left, but the Steers turned it over with two seconds to go.
A last-second halfcourt heave by the Hornets was off the mark.
In other boys games:
* Reserve guard Matt Sena scored all 15 of his points in the fourth quarter as District 3-1A leader Fort Sumner pulled away down the stretch for a 75-60 victory at Elida.
“He was the the kid that stepped up tonight when we needed it,” Foxes coach Weems said.
Elida led 52-49 after three quarters heading into the fourth quarter. Jeremy Gauna led the Foxes (14-3, 4-0) with 18 points.
“We managed to get some big shots off and some big stops,” Weems said. “They’re a scrappy team, they came after us.”
Sophomore Trenton Chenault paced Elida with 18, followed by sophomore Wesley Gilmore with 14 and junior Caleb Widener with 13.
“The fourth (quarter) looks a lot wilder than it was,” Tigers coach Darrell Chenault said. “We had to start fouling them, and it got out of hand from there.”
* Clovis Christian used hot shooting and solid defense to beat host Mosquero 72-41 in a District 4-1A matchup.
Will Genitski lead the Eagles (11-7, 3-1) with 17 points, while Dustin Handley added 12.
“We kinda struggled offensively in the first quarter,” CCS coach Jimmy Joe Robinson said. “We switched to a triangle offense and we got better position inside.”
The Eagles nailed seven 3-pointers in the game.
Jeremy Wheeler, Gabriel Trujillo and Joseph Trujillo scored 10 each for Mosquero.
n In a non-district game played at the Rip Griffin Center in Lubbock, Arsenio Geter scored 22 points and Trevor Turnbow added six 3-pointers and 19 points, helping Muleshoe (12-12) earn a 61-59 victory over Sweetwater.
* Junior forward Jessica Bachicha scored a season-high 20 points, leading four Bovina players in double figures as the Fillies whipped Morton 77-54 in a Texas District 3-1A matchup.
Bovina opened a 20-point halftime lead and cruised the rest of the way. Irma Rocha (14), Laura Rocha (13) and Lucero Saucedo (12) also reached double figures for the Fillies (15-10, 3-2).
n Senior Tiffani Medeiros sparked a 20-0 first-quarter run with 12 points, including 8-of-8 free throws, and Clovis Christian cruised to a 56-29 victory at Mosquero in District 4-1A.
Meideros finished with 18 points — 10-of-10 from the line — for the Lady Eagles (10-8, 3-1), who cruised into the fourth quarter with a 47-14 lead.
Ashleigh Mitchell was Mosquero’s leading scorer with seven points.
n Senior Kodi Armitage scored 21 points and District 3-1A leader Elida rode a 25-point second quarter past Fort Sumner 53-45 at Elida.
Armitage and Lindsey Bob Smith, who finished with 10 points, each had two of Elida’s six 3-pointers. The Lady Tigers (16-2, 3-0) broke away from a 9-9 tie at the quarter to lead 34-21 at halftime.
Senior Lindsay Mansell scored 14 points for the Vixens (9-8, 2-2), and senior Julie Wood added 11.
