Johnnie L. Fitzgerald, 79, of Plains, Texas, died Wednesday Nov. 9, 2005, at his home in Plains.
He was born May 27, 1926, to John and Dillie Fitzgerald in Terry County. He attended school at Plains High School and Texas Tech University.
He married Melba Starnes on Aug. 28, 1949, in Brownfield. He served on the finance committee and as chairman of the administrative board at his church and taught Sunday school. He served in the U.S. Army in the First Cavalry Division during World War II. He was also a member of the American Legion for 54 years.
He was named the Outstanding Rancher of the Year in 1991 by the county Soil Conservation District.
He served as Yoakum County commissioner for 24 years and retired in 1991.
Survivors include his wife, Melba; four daughters, Dianne Fitzgerald of Lubbock, Gwen Helms (and husband, Clay) of Rotan, Texas, and Johna DeBusk (Tim) and Lynne Winn (Tony), all of Plains, Texas; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren; a brother, Melvin Fitzgerald of Clovis, and two sisters; Winnell Loe and Linda Huddleston, both of Canyon and Martha Palmer.
The Rev. Rick Doyle will officiate with Rev. Cam Givan and the Rev. Ken Peterson assisting. The U.S. Army will give military honors at the graveside in Plains Yoakum County Cemetery.
