L.W. McGuffin, 90, of Albuquerque, died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2005, at his residence.
He was born April 7, 1915, in Paducah, Texas, to Amanda and C.C. McGuffin. He worked with his father in the family boot making business. He attended Eastern New Mexico Junior College and sang baritone in the school barber shop quartet. He worked in Portales at John Skinner’s Boot Shop. On Sept. 1, 1940, he married Edith Wheeler in Portales. He joined the staff at Wheeler Mortuary working for his father-in-law and became a licensed funeral director.
Family members said he was a president of the New Mexico State Funeral Director’s Association and served on the Portales School Board. He was a past president of the Portales Rotary Club where he maintained perfect attendance for 52 years, family members said.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He and his daughter, Deana, represented New Mexico as boot makers in the Smithsonian Folk Life Festival on the mall in Washington, D.C. His boots remain in a permanent traveling display with the Smithsonian.
Family members said he was known for elaborate bolo ties and jewelry.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Orell Hobbs; and his wife, Edith.
Survivors include daughters Nina Harper of Seal Beach, Calif., May Ann MacFie (and husband Paul Elsey) of Stanton, Ky. and Deana McGuffin of Albuquerque; granddaughter, Trina Woodall (Brady) of Austin, Texas; great-grandson, Ian Woodall and nephews, Dr. E.J. Wheeler (Carol) of Lubbock and Van Hobbs (Ann) of Roswell.
Rev. Harry Riser will officiate
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Melvin Lovorn, Howard Overby, Otis Davis, Eldin Cooper, David Stone and Marlin Poynor.
Honorary pallbearers are C. H. Justus, Jack Carr, Dr. Jack Williamson, Preston Dunn, Cecil Cook, Ernest Leach, Dewey Langston, Dr. Jake Moberly, Scott Reeves, Jim Hass and Al Sutton.
