Game of the night
Fort Sumner’s boys continued to roll Friday night, clinching the District 3-1A regular-season championship with a 63-57 victory over the Dora Coyotes in Dora.
Senior Jeremy Gauna scored 20 points, including four 3-point baskets, as the Foxes (19-3, 7-0 district) ran their winning streak to 13 games. Dora (14-10, 4-2) was the last team with a chance to catch Fort Sumner.
“We feel pretty good about ourselves, but it’s not over yet,” said Foxes coach Wes Weems, whose team closes regular-season and district play on Tuesday against Elida. “We’ve got one game left (in the regular season).”
Down by 10 points after three quarters, the Coyotes closed to 56-54 when Tyler Wilhoit took a lob pass for a basket with 1:53 left. But the Foxes scored the final five points, all from the free throw line, in the final minute.
Richard Canales converted 3-of-4 charity tosses in that stretch and Ryan Fikany added two free throws with 16 seconds to go.
Fikany finished with 15 points and Stephen Gallegos added 12 for the Foxes. Dora’s leading scorers were Wilhoit with 15 and Clay Smith with 13.
* Brady Black scored 11 points and Arsenio Geter added 10 as Muleshoe locked up a District 2-3A berth with a 55-45 victory over Littlefield.
* Carlos Ruiz scored 15 points, leading three Melrose players in double figures in a 50-41 win at Floyd.
* At Farwell, Texico dominated the second and fourth quarters and rolled to a 74-53 victory over border rival Farwell behind 18 points from senior Aaron Vaughan.
A girls game between the schools was canceled because Farwell faces Bovina in a playoff for second place in Texas District 3-1A in a 7 p.m. tipoff today at Rock Staubus Gym in Clovis. The winner will advance to the playoffs.
* Seniors Lindsay Mansell and Kaylynn Johnson scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, and Fort Sumner opened a 26-10 halftime lead en route to a 57-38 District 3-1A victory over Dora.
