Jewel Lavelle Cox Hogg was born Oct. 13, 1916, in Ringwood, Okla., to Edward and Leona Florence Warner Cox. In 1925, the family moved to the Richland community. The country store they owned and operated was moved in 1928 to State Highway 209 and a settlement was founded named Pep. She graduated from Portales High School in 1933 and attended Eastern New Mexico College. She worked in the family business until she married Lloyd Laverne Mitchell of Pep on July 4, 1938. They moved to Albuquerque and later Bayard. With her divorce in 1949, she returned to Portales. She married John B. Hogg Jr. in Clovis on Oct. 28, 1949. She worked at the bus depot in Portales before joining her husband in their real estate enterprise. She was an avid genealogist for more than 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and siblings, Opal Jane Cox, Ural Gladys Adair, Eunice Violet Damon, Edward Everett Cox, Lois Zilpha Cox, Quentin Doyle Cox, Malcolm Dwight Cox, Innes Warner Cox, Mary Daryl Cares and Miriam Leona Mitchell.
Survivors include her husband of 56 years, John B. Hogg; a son, Ronald Lloyd Mitchell (and wife, Kathie) of Mesa, Ariz.; two daughters, Lois Sharon Mitchell Simnacher (Darwin) of Clovis and Carolyn Jane Hogg Kernberger (Richard Epstein) of Socorro; and seven grandchildren, Michelle Angelique Simnacher (Donna Read) of Broomfield, Colo., Karrie Denise Mitchell (Cory Seemiller) of Tucson, Ariz., Kragen Javier Sitaker (Beatrice Murch) of San Francisco, Ryan Scott Mitchell of Mesa, Ariz., Reuben Jayseph Sittler of San Francisco and Serafina Monica Kernberger of Vancouver, B.C., Canada.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Portales Public Library for the genealogy collection.
