Laverna Beth Johnson, 71, of Costa Mesa, Calif., died Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006, at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif.
She was born Sept. 29, 1934, in Clovis. She grew up in the Oklahoma Lane community and attended schools in Oklahoma Lane and Farwell, where she graduated in 1953.
She moved with her family to California in 1961 from Abernathy, Texas. She was a custodial supervisor for 32 years and retired from the University of California at Irvine in 2003.
Family members said when she wasn’t spending time with her family, she kept in touch with many friends and relatives on her computer. She was an avid fan of pogo.com, playing games and visiting in the chat room where she found many people from Farwell and the surrounding area.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Everett and Fern Christian and a sister, Bobbie Ann McFarland.
She is survived by two daughters, Candace Rice (and husband Rob) of Costa Mesa, Calif. and Jo Beth Montoya (Gabe) of Mission Viejo, Calif.; a son, Brent Barton (Cathy) of Corona, Calif.; four sisters, Billie Kittrell of Lawndale, Calif., Bernice Norton of Pampa, Texas, Barbara Clancy of Clovis and Belva Bowers of Farwell; seven grandsons; two great granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews to whom she was fondly known as Uncle Verna.
