TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Eastern New Mexico University rode the hot hitting of second baseman Mike McDuffie and stellar relief work by sophomore right-handers Charlie Ward and Keith Balderaz to a sweep of Northeastern State in a Lone Star Conference crossover doubleheader Saturday at Rousey Field.
The Greyhounds won the opener 7-6 and scored twice in the top of the seventh to win the nightcap 7-5. EMNU (13-3) took three of four from the Redmen (2-8) in the weekend series.
Junior second baseman Mike McDuffie went 3-for-4 in both games. Designated hitter Kelton Hayes had four hits and four runs batted in, including a single, a double and three RBIs in the opener.
Right-hander Evan Courteau (3-1) worked five innings in the opener before giving way to Ward, who struck out two in a 1-2-3 sixth. Balderaz finished with a perfect seventh.
Starter Jacob Parrish (1-2) took the loss.
Daniel Roebuck, the second of three Northeastern pitchers, took the loss. Chad Morrow and John Ford each had two hits for the Redmen.
Ward relieved freshman left-hander Seth Clabaugh in the sixth inning of the second game and picked up his third win of the season against no losses, allowing one hit. Balderaz earned another save, his seventh, despite giving up two hits in the seventh.
Shortstop Matt Hinojosa, batting ninth, went 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in the second game. Jared Mixon and Hector Morales had two hits each for Northeastern (2-9).
