AMARILLO — The Muleshoe Mules’ run in the Texas Class 3A basketball playoffs came to an end Tuesday night as Borger held on down the stretch for a 56-49 victory in a regional round game at Amarillo High.
With the Bulldogs clinging to a 50-49 lead, 6-foot-5 post Nathan Purswell went 6-for-6 from the free throw line over the final 22 seconds to nail down the win. Borger (21-11) advances to face Carrollton Ranchview in an 8:30 p.m.
(CST) contest on Friday at Texas Tech’s United Spirit Arena in Lubbock.
Purswell led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Tyler Fernandez added 13 and Andrew Morton scored 10. For Muleshoe (18-14), which had its five-game winning streak snapped, senior Arsenio Geter had two 3-pointers and 19 points, senior Brady Black added 16 and senior Trevor Turnbow scored 10.
Borger led most of the way, but the Mules were able to keep it close. Morton’s basket beat the halftime buzzer and gave the Bulldogs a 32-30 lead at the break.
The margin grew to six points midway through the third period. Borger’s D.J. Dickson hit another buzzer-beater to end the third quarter, this time a 3-pointer, to give the Bulldogs a 46-39 margin.
Trailing 50-44 with just under three minutes left, Muleshoe pulled close on two layups by Brady. Geter then went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to make it a one-point game with 36 seconds left, setting the stage for Purswell.
