Henry Jenkins, 85, of Portales, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at Covenant Hospital in Lubbock.
Born June 3, 1920, in Berkeley, Calif., to Nettie and Oliver Lloyd Jenkins, he grew up in Berkeley and attended his first two years of college there. He transferred to Oakland Tech, where he completed an engineering degree.
He married the former Alice Jean “Jeanie” Hall in June 1941. He moved to Washington, D.C., in 1973, and worked as a civil engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense for many years, receiving several overseas assignments. When he retired in 1980, he moved to Portales to make his home. For several years, he operated Autonauts Garage on the Floyd Highway. Family members said he loved collecting and working on old cars, especially Studebakers, Fords and Willys.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Steven Jenkins, who died in 2001.
He is survived by a daughter, Nettie Jenkins of Portales; a son, Lloyd Carl Jenkins of San Pedro, Calif.; a foster son, Lon Wright of Portales; and six grandchildren.
