Neoma Lucille Settle Merrick, 89, of Clovis, died Sunday, March 19, 2006, at the Retirement Ranch in Clovis.
Born July 4, 1916, in Driftwood, Okla., to Lizzie and Bert Settle, she earned a bachelor of science degree in education from Northwestern State College in Alva, Okla.
Orville Gore Stephenson on Dec. 23, 1937. She taught in rural schools in Oklahoma, with her last teaching job in Groom. She and her husband owned and operated the Groom Drug Store.
After her first husband died in 1955, she married Henry Merrick in 1956, and they farmed after the sale of the drugstore. She was a member of the Groom Church of Christ, Daughters of the American Revolution and a charter member of the Pampa, Fla., chapter. She was active with the Candy Striper Girls at the Groom Hospital.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; a brother, Leroy Settle; two granddaughters; an infant great-grandson, and a great-grandson, Joshua Wheeler.
She is survived by two daughters, Maxine Kelso (and husband, Ferman) of Clovis, and Carolyn May of Arlington, Texas; a son, Steve Stephenson (Connie); a stepdaughter, Marlys Melton (Larry) of Frankston, Texas; nine grandchildren, Kelly Kelso of Aztec, Nicole Van Pelt of Panama City, Fla., Sarah Warrick of Denison, Texas, Stephon Stephenson of Canyon, Texas, Byron May of Pampa, Texas, Dallas May (Sarah) of Abilene, Texas, Stephanie May of Arlington, Texas, Lauren Melton of Frisco, Texas, and Jeremy Melton of Frankston, Texas; three nieces, Sue, Donna and Karen Settle of Oklahoma, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Kent Watson of Claude Church of Christ will officiate services. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Alva Municipal Cemetery, Alva, Okla., with Hartnell Johnson officiating.
