Whitworth, Jeffie

Jeffie Whitworth, 89, of Santa Fe and formerly of Portales, died Tuesday, May 9, 2006, at Casa Real Nursing Home in Santa Fe.

She was born Nov. 4, 1916, in Bronco, Texas, to Etha and Jefferson Davis Hunter.

As a small child, she moved with her family to Portales. They built and owned the Traveler’s Inn, a local landmark, which also served as the family home for several years. She graduated from high school in Portales in 1934. She was employed as a secretary at Home Federal Savings and Loan from 1964 until her retirement in 1979. After she retired, she earned a bachelor’s degree. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi. For several years she was an election worker at the polls. Family members said she enjoyed playing bridge and reading. Through the years she had developed deep friendships that sustained her throughout her life, they said. For the past five years she had made her home in Santa Fe to be near her daughters. She was a devoted mother, who always made her two daughters her top priority, according to her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Ann Stratton and Con Tusha.

Survivors include her daughters, Libby Sternberg (and husband, Milt) of Santa Fe and Sissy Othick (Terry) of Albuquerque; grandchildren, Ashlee Othick-Andrews (Sam) of Albuquerque, Brock Sternberg (Rikke) of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Karla Sternberg of Houston; and great-grandchildren, Liva and Ernst Sternberg.

The Rev. Harry Riser will officiate services, assisted by Terry Othick.
Burial will take place in Portales Cemetery.
