Neal J. Westring, 66, of Portales died Thursday, May 18, 2006, at his home.
He was born April 15, 1940, in Kanosh, Utah, to Lenore and Harold D. Westring. He grew up in Lehi, Utah. He joined the Navy at 16. He married Jean Scherer on June 16, 1962, in San Diego. He met his wife at the Moonglow Bar in San Diego, and won her wedding ring in a poker game. They lived in Claremont, Calif., and Ramona, Calif. When he retired from truck driving in 2003, they moved to Portales.
Family members said he was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed fishing with his grandsons and “dune buggying.”
He was a member of the American Legion and the Episcopal Church.
He was preceded in death by parents and his only brother, Ray Westring.
He is survived his wife of Portales; two sons, Ronald J. Westring of San Diego, Calif., and Donald James Westring of Ramona, Calif., two daughters, Sharon Hooper and Caren Eslick (and husband, James), all of Portales; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 90790, Albuquerque, NM 87199-0790.
