Raymond R. Mendoza, 82, of Cambridge, N.Y., and formerly of Clovis, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, in Troy, N.Y.
Born Jan. 22, 1924, in Los Angeles to Sidney Mendoza and Lupe Contreras-Pascutti, he married Mary Casillas on June 22, 1948. He retired from the trucking business in Los Angeles. He lived part of the year in Clovis and the other in Cambridge.
Family members said he was a great patron of theatre, opera, classical music and the arts. He loved film and was a lifelong student of film history, they said. In his early years, he performed in several operas and theatre in the Los Angeles area and his favorite role was that of “Smokey” in the musical “Damn Yankees,” family members said.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Arthur Stewart; and his stepfather, Mario Pascutti.
Survivors include his partner, Brian Jennings; ex-wife, Mary Mendoza; three daughters, Christy Mendoza of Clovis, Julie Mann (and husband, Jim) of Stockton, Calif., and Patricia Mendoza (Keith) of Las Vegas, N.M.; a son, Michael Mendoza (Bonnie) of Clovis; three grandchildren, Jordan Mendoza and Alek Mendoza of Clovis and Caetano Mendoza-Kjelstrom of Las Vegas, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Cremation has taken place in Bennington, Vt.
Memorials may be made to the CCC Foundation for the Cultural Arts Series at Clovis Community College in care of Stephanie Spencer, 417 Schepps Blvd.; Clovis, NM 88101.
