Chavez shoots 76 in qualifier meet

ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High grad Guillermo Chavez shot a first-round score of 40-36 — 76 on Tuesday in the first round of a United States Golf Association amateur qualifying tournament at the University of New Mexico’s Championship Golf Course.

Chavez, who recently completed his freshman year at UNM, is in a three-way tie for 18th in a field of 33 players. Robb Bierbaum and Steve Saunders of Albuquerque and Davis Nordell of El Paso share the first-round lead, all shooting 2-under-par 70.

The final round of the event is scheduled for today. The top two finishers in the tournament advance to the USGA Amateur Championship Aug. 21-27 at Hazeltine Golf Course near Minneapolis.
